Yokohama vs Hong Kong Time Difference

Yokohama is 1 hour ahead of Hong Kong

A 09:00 breakfast meeting in Yokohama is an 08:00 start in Hong Kong. Every day. The gap stays locked because both cities ignore daylight saving time.

Why the gap never moves

Japan Standard Time is UTC+9. Hong Kong Time is UTC+8. Yokohama sits at 139.650°E, further east than Hong Kong, so the sun arrives earlier. Each 15-degree band of longitude represents one hour of time difference, and these two cities sit in adjacent bands.

The offset holds steady whether you check in January or July. Subtract one hour from Yokohama time to get Hong Kong time. Add one hour to Hong Kong time to get Yokohama time.

No daylight saving in either city

Neither Japan nor Hong Kong observes daylight saving time. The 1-hour gap never widens to 2 hours or shrinks to zero. Set your calendar once and forget about it.

Japan ran a brief summer time experiment from 1948 to 1951 under Allied occupation. Farmers opposed it, educators worried about children walking to school in darker mornings, and the public tired of occupation-era mandates. The law was abolished in 1951 and no legislation has passed since.

Compare this with cities that do use DST. Yokohama vs London shifts between 8 and9 hours depending on the season. Yokohama vs Hong Kong is simpler: always1 hour.

Best calling hours

The1-hour difference is small enough that standard working hours overlap almost completely. A09:00 start in Hong Kong is10:00 in Yokohama. A17:00 close in Yokohama is16:00 in Hong Kong.

For a typical09:00 to18:00 workday in both cities, the overlap covers the entire day. Only the first hour of Hong Kong's morning and the last hour of Yokohama's evening fall outside it. Any time between10:00 and17:00 Yokohama time works.

One group should ignore the default advice to call during standard business hours: people coordinating with Hong Kong's financial markets. The Hong Kong Stock Exchange opens at09:00 HKT, which is10:00 JST. To catch the open, call at09:45 Yokohama time.
