Question 1

Is Yokohama time the same as Tokyo time?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Yokohama and Tokyo share the same IANA time zone (`Asia/Tokyo`). Both use Japan Standard Time (JST), UTC+9. No separate municipal time authority exists.

Question 2

Why does the time difference between Yokohama and New York change?

Accepted Answer

New York observes daylight saving time. It moves from EST (UTC-5) to EDT (UTC-4) in March and back in November. Yokohama does not change its clocks. The gap shifts from 14 hours to 13 hours.

Question 3

Does Japan ever use daylight saving time?

Accepted Answer

No. Japan observed DST from 1948 to 1951 under Allied occupation and abolished it permanently in 1951. No current legislation exists to reintroduce it.

Question 4

What time zone abbreviation does Yokohama use?

Accepted Answer

JST (Japan Standard Time). During the occupation years, JST also stood for "Japan Summer Time," which causes confusion in old documents. Today, JST means Japan Standard Time, UTC+9, year-round.

Question 5

How do I convert Yokohama time to my local time without a tool?

Accepted Answer

Add or subtract the UTC offset. Yokohama is UTC+9. If your city is UTC-5 (New York in winter), the difference is 14 hours. If your city is UTC+8 (Singapore), the difference is 1 hour. For cities with half-hour offsets (Mumbai, UTC+5:30), add the half hour.

Question 6

Who should double-check their time conversion more than once a year?

Accepted Answer

Anyone scheduling a regular meeting with someone in a city that observes DST. If you talk to New York every Monday, the time that works in January will be one hour off in July. Set a calendar reminder to re-check on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November.
